Community of Staunton Update

It has been just over four years since Community Hospital of Staunton affiliated with Anderson Hospital. In that time, Community Hospital of Staunton’s Board of Trustees and administration have worked diligently with Anderson Hospital leaders to unify and enhance the care offered at both campuses.

Community Hospital of Staunton is proud that all employees have kept their jobs as was promised during talks of affiliating the two organizations. Additionally, the following has taken place at Community Hospital of Staunton:

  • A complete refresh of a total of six patient rooms has been completed. Features of the rooms include all new multi-function LED lighting, new flooring, doors, exterior windows, ceilings, head wall systems, soundproofing, cabinets, and closets. Reconfigured restrooms with all new fixtures and layouts are a prominent improvement.
  • Community Hospital of Staunton purchased a new replacement CT scanner at a total cost of $460,000. With the affiliation, the hospital has greater purchasing power for large pieces of equipment such as this. As a participant in the Stat Stroke Program, a CT scanner is a critical diagnostic tool in determining if a patient is having or has had a stroke. The lifespan of diagnostic equipment such as CT Scanners and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is approximately 10 years. “A new CT Scanner will ensure that CHS maintains the highest standard of health care, minimizes the possibility of equipment failure, and remains abreast of new and rapidly changing technology,” says Sue Campbell, CEO of Community Hospital of Staunton.
  • Specialty services, including cardiology, obstetrics and gynecology, and general surgery were added with plans to for additional clinics in the future.
  • Employee benefits were combined and expanded.
  • The compliance program at CHS was strengthened.
  • A new computer software program known as Meditech will be implemented by November 2019 uniting all Anderson Healthcare partners and will greatly enhance the efficiency of patient services.

Going forward, Community Hospital of Staunton and Anderson Hospital have proposed a new, multi-million dollar, state-of-the art surgery center to be built off of Governor’s Parkway on Goshen Road in Edwardsville. As only outpatient surgery is performed at Staunton, and it has declined over the past several years to an average of only fifteen surgical procedures per month, this will provide a better option for our community. “In today’s healthcare climate of very strict regulation, it is increasingly very difficult to maintain an up-to-date surgical department. Many insurance companies are now requiring patients to utilize surgery centers for their surgical needs,” said Sue Campbell, CEO of Community Hospital. “We feel that we will be able to continue to provide an excellent, high quality surgical option to our patients by utilizing the new ambulatory surgical center.”

The medical complex will be known as the Anderson Goshen Campus and will begin with an $8.5 million, 18,000 square foot building that will house an ambulatory surgical treatment center and a pediatric specialty clinic.

The surgery center will provide an array of services for both adults and children. “Our plans are to provide an exceptional facility and patient experience,” said Lisa Klaustermeier, Anderson Hospital Chief Nursing Officer.

SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital has signed a letter of intent with Anderson to be the pediatric partner, in partnership with SLUCare Physician Group, in this unique facility. “Anderson and SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital have a longstanding relationship that has enhanced pediatric services in Madison and our surrounding counties,” said Keith Page, Anderson Healthcare President and CEO. “This facility continues that partnership while also offering exceptional outpatient surgery options for adults.”

Three additional buildings are planned in the future for the complex and may include a physician office building, urgent care center and imaging center. This project is subject to approval by the Illinois’ Health Facilities & Services Review Board. Anderson Hospital hopes to receive approval from the state by the end of 2018 with intent to break ground on the project in early 2019.

“On behalf of the Community Hospital of Staunton Board of Trustees and administration, I would like to thank the employees, medical staff, volunteers, and citizens of Staunton for their continued support of our hospital. We are proud of the excellent healthcare services offered in Staunton,” said Don Kasubke, president of the CHS Board of Trustees.
